Description

Terrace or retaining wall, forming a northward continuation of the party boundary between nos.17 and 18 Wyle Cop, and forming the boundary between the latter's back yard and the gardens of Kenneth House (PRN 62445) and the adjacent properties in Dogpole Court. The terrace was examined during a UAD field visit; it stands approx. 6.3m-6.7m high, its upper courses built in pre-Victorian brickwork, its lower courses (visible from the yard of 18 Wyle Cop) mainly of orange-brown sandstone finely jointed ashlar, courses 200-300mm high, blocks up to 900mm long. The top of the masonry is c.2.7m above yard level at the rear of no.19 Wyle Cop (i.e. at c.62.11m) [<1>]. The first evidence of antiquarian interest in this terrace is in J B Blakeway's MS notes [<2>]; in which he proposed that part of the town wall circuit crossed Wyle Cop 'about the middle of its descent, and in the back part of the premises opposite, now occupied by Sir John Betton, were the foundations of a strong tower now destroyed'; the editor's (Wm Phillips's) note appended to this passage in 1905 locates 'Betton's Mansion' at the rear of 18 and 19 Wyle Cop, and adds that 'some red sandstone masonry indicates the line of the wall' [<2>]. R E Davies explored this area in c.1904, noting this wall, and its continuation of the line of the town wall east of Dogpole; from this he concluded that it must have had a defensive role (as per Blakeway) and was not merely a retaining wall or terrace [<3>] <4>
