Description

Plot series on the north side of Mardol, now bounded on the north west by Smithfield Road, and on the south east by Phoenix Place; bounded at the rear by Roushill. The most distinctive and well-preserved historic plot-series in Shrewsbury. All the constituent properties exhibit a strong westward curve, most apparent at the rear of the King's Head, no.48. Extensive parallels in other towns suggest that this was to give river-front access to the largest number of properties, probably for early medieval crafts needing river access or supplies of running water. The present, probably medieval, strip-plots have been suggested to have been contrived by the sub-division of an earlier field pattern serving a similar function in terms of access to alluvial grazing and to the river. The series appears to have been repeatedly interrupted: by the construction of the town wall [PRN 62401] in the early 13th century, by the construction of the Roushill Wall [PRN 62402] in 1645-51, and finally by Smithfield Road in 1848 [<1>] <2>

It is implied by a later (2000) evaluation report, apparently on the basis of 1987 cellar work, that possible Saxon deposits may exist at 48 Mardol <3>
