Description

Tenement plot series (morphological component). A series of six plots on the south side of Castle Street with tails curving and tapering to the east, converging on the line of the town wall (62531),and encroaching forward from the general line of the southern frontage at the site of the former Outer Bailey gate (62503). The encroachment is most apparent on the 1st ed. O.S. 1:500 at nos. 29 and 30, which projected c.3-4m from the general frontage line; the feature is still apparent but less marked following the redevelopment of the Thornes Hall/Co-op site (no.28). The morphology of this group appears to have been in part determined by the course of the Outer Bailey defences (62502),and by a drop in ground level from north to south into the defile occupied by St Mary's Water Lane; this defile has been adapted by terracing, apparent particularly in the three-level basement premises of the Traitor's Gate Restaurant, Water Lane, the micro-terraces of which reflect the converging plot boundaries at the rear of this series <1>
