Description

Single ditched sub-rectangular enclosure. I Burrow comment 1978

Associated with this enclosure are linear cropmarks of uncertain nature forming either a field system or further enclosures. Among these is a small rectangular single-ditched enclosure with a possible entrance at the W side. The amorphous 100m W/E enclosure was all that was visible on the 1977 AP [<1>] and was thus all that was plotted by Whimster in 1981 [<9>]. In 1989 a Mrs McCarthy, who was doing research on the Wooton Castle area reported that the field in which the amorphous enclosure lies is marked as Castle Field on the 1838 Tithe Award map, and also on an 1808 estate map. The latter also records fields called Castle Yard Meadow and Castle Yard to the north east <10>

The small rectangular enclosure revealed by subsequent APs, eg [<2>] taken in 1984, is to the east at c SJ3405 2721. It has been added as a pencil sketch plot to the SMR record map <16>

The site lies upon a low ridge in gently undulating, boulder clay farmland, within a field at present under a beet crop. The markings are of a sub-rectangular enclosure, with large, rounded corners, measuring about 50.0 to 70.0 m north-west to south-east, by 70.0 m transversely; the broader end being to the north-west. Nothing was seen on the ground to account for the air photograph markings which from their form and situation, are probably of a pastoral enclosure of Iron Age/Romano British date. <17>

This enclosure was recorded as part of the Cambridge University Cropmark Project (1981-5). The project archive is held in the RCHME archive stores (collection UID: 1035090). <18>

An examination of further photography (NMR SJ 3327/1, 3-12; SJ 3426/1-3; SJ 3427/1-2, 6 (1092-3), 7-8, 11-12, 14-15, 19) reveals that the enclosure recorded above is infact part of a series of enclosures which perhaps represent a field system. Possible Iron Age/Roman date. <19>
