Description

During a watching brief on water mains renewal in 1998/99, the remains of a timber structure were observed in section under Castle Street. These consisted of a row of squared timber stakes and a horizontal beam. A sample of the timbers was radiocarbon dated and produced a calibrated date centred on 1032 AD. It is possible that the timbers represent the remains of one of the 51 dwellings cleared to make way for Shrewsbury Castle and a realigned road layout in the 1060s, as the site lies just outside the probable limit of the original outer bailey <1>

It is suggested that these oak posts could be consistent with the use of felled timbers in the 1060s for the outer bailey gate, or a bridge over a ditch outside it, but the timbers could equally be associated with some pre-Conquest structure - earlier defences making use of this 85-metre isthmus. <2><2a>
