Description

Excavations on land immediately adjoining the east wall of the Horse and Jockey Inn produced Roman levels (including a possible cremation in a 2nd century flagon), remains of a 14th century building and pits associated with a 17th century building. Finds included late C17 and early C18 pottery and tobacco pipes, two spindle whorls and stratified medieval pottery. The Horse and Jockey was built in the 18th century and in the 1830s a cottage with a cellar was built in its yard <1><2>

A Roman cremation burial disturbed in the medieval period, found in these excavations has also been noted in the record relating to SA 00909, the Roman fort <3>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, as one of less than 10 Romano-British Cemeteries <4>

CMHTS Comment: The interim report [<5>] suggested that the medieval house might have been a weaver's, on the basis of two spindle whorls found <6>
