Description
This was the first branch line to reach the plateway systems of the Coalbrookdale area. It had been included in the Shrewsbury & Birmingham Railway's original Parliamentary authorisation of 1846, but was not constructed until much later, opening in June 1854. It left the SBR main line at Madeley Junction (just west of Shifnal) and ran down only to Lightmoor, though it was known as the Coalbrookdale Branch. Shortly after it opened, in 1854, the SBR became part of the Great Western Railway <1>
The Madeley Branch Railway was opened in 1847 from the Coalbrookdale Branch Railway at Lightmoor to Madeley Junction on the Shrewsbury and Birmingham Railway. <2>
