Description
In 1828 land on the Madeley Court estates was bought by James Foster, an industrialist who already operated furnaces and mines in the Black Country and at Stourbridge, as well as locally at Wombridge and Calcutts. He had forges at Eardington and Hampton Loade. Foster only began to exploit the mineral resources in 1840. He moved his furnaces from Wombridge to Madeley Court in 1845-7. There were up to 17 pits in the Madeley Court colliery, and working ceased by 1911. <1>
