Description
No4 Mound c 30ft (7m) in diameter and c 18ins (0.3m) high. Excavated in 1884. Nothing found <1a>
Turf and gorse covered. In fair condition. No signs of ditch. OS FI 1973 <1>
Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, Medium score as one of 93 Bowl Barrows <4>
Re-Scheduled in 1994, together with the immediately adjacent barrow [PRN 01173]. The monument includes the remains of two small bowl barrows situated on the level plain between the River Teme to the SW and River Corve to the NE. The northernmost barrow is visible as a well defined sandy mound 12m N-S by 11m transversely standing up to 1.5m high. The barrow is believed to have been partially excavated in 1884, revealing evidence of a cremation burial and a small piece of bronze. Although no longer visible as a surface feature, a ditch, from which material was quarried during the construction of the monument, surrounds the mound. This has become infilled over the years but survives as a buried feature apx 1m wide. The second barrow lies some 23m to the south and comprises a low earthen mound 7m in diameter and up to 0.5m high. This barrow is also believed to have been partially excavated in 1884, though no finds are recorded from it. Similarly it shows no surface indication of a surrounding quarry ditch though one will survive as a buried feature apx 1m wide <5>
In March 2002 it was concluded that the two barrows comprising SM 19118 were PRNs 03039 and 03056 and PRN 01173 was identified as SM 19119<6>
However, a review of the information in August 2007 led to the conclusion that SM 19118 related to PRNs 01173 (as the northern barrow) and 03039 (as the southern of the two) and that PRN 03056 was SM19119. <7>
