Description

1985. There is in the possession of the present (1893) squire a view of an old stone house (demolished in 1803 see PRN 13207), surrounded by a moat, Elizabethan in style. It was reproduced by the late Mrs Stackhouse-Acton in her Garrisons of Shropshire .<1>

The name Moat Wood is marked on the OS 6 (1954) immediately to the NE of Longnor Hall. Within the wood is depicted a narrow, linear, water-filled feature and a pond <2>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, Low score as one of 133 moated sites. <3>

A c.1790 illustration (reproduced as Plate 1) shows the main front of the old house as having faced NW. The house appears to have been of stone construction, comprising gour three storey gables with a lower single range to the SE side. A second image of the house was painted by Repton in his Red Book, 1803 (reproduced as Plate 2). This is taken from the SE and shows the side and back elevations of the house with the moat in the foreground. There would have been productive and possibly ornamental gardens associated with the old hall. A garden is reported at Longner, within the moat, by 1614. <4>

Mentioned in a gazetteer of 'castles' in Shropshire, although the sources of the information are not clear.<5>
