Description

'Fragment of Town Walls to west of Postern Gate' :
Probably C13. A section of sandstone rubble wall, approximately 6yds in length and 15ft high on its west side <1>

Although described as Town Wall in the LB desc, likely to be part castle wall, demolished in 1901 during the building of the Post Office <2a>

A short length of the wall of the outer bailey (of the castle SA371) immediately south of its NW corner (under the present post office buildings). The wall facing has been removed down to present ground level, but work in January 1976 revealed the inner face, made of roughly shaped red sandstone ashlar. No archaeological deposits were damaged by this work. I Burrow FI 1976 <4>
