Description
The main gate (PRN 00422) into the outer bailey of the castle was blocked by c1540 and a Postern created by breaching the castle wall to the east <1a>. The illustration in <1b> clearly shows a Romanesque arch. It is difficult to see how this could have been constructed as late as 1540, unless re-used from another structure. Destroyed in 1821. The relationship of this gate to the main castle gate or barbican (SA422) apparently immediately adjacent, is not clear. <1c>
