Description

The main street of [Llanymynech] follows the alignment of Offa's Dyke and the site is located over the bank and ditch. The Monmouthshire Inventory of Ancient Monuments in Wales states: “The Lion Hotel is built on [Offa's Dyke], and also the smithy (now a dwelling house), the Bradford Arms Inn, the Bradford cottages, the Cross Keys Hotel, and the shop and cottages to the north. The bank can be seen between the Lion Hotel and the smithy, and also where the roads cross.” (<1a>). During a site visit one local inhabitant said that the buildings had been positioned along the line of the dyke so that the cellars could be easily dug into the softer ditch fill. <1>
