Description

S of the River Camlad (the county boundary), the dyke appears as a bank 0.9m high in the meadows. Pasture with large oaks. Further S, the bank is 1.2m high being used as an old green lane. <1>

Sites were excavated to the north and south of the River Camlad and the full-scale ditch was found adjacent to the river on both sides. This strongly suggests that Offa’s Dyke was built right up to the river banks, as any significant changes in the course of the river would have destroyed all evidence. This conclusion was strengthened by the observation of distinct differences in the material of the banks exposed after serious flooding had recently removed vegetation from the face of the banks. These anomalies on both the southern and northern banks were exactly in line with the known course of the Dyke. From the Camlad Valley, Offa’s Dyke climbs the steep slope to the north and curves round the western slope of the valley side to resume its straight alignment, now with a north-easterly trend. The line is again holding the western slope of an upland area that overlooks the valley of the River Severn. Both the bank and the ditch are clearly visible for most of this length and the line is not in doubt here until the floodplain of the River Severn is reached near Buttington. <2>
