Description
A pit located during excavation in the inner bailey of Shrewsbury castle, containing late pre-Conquest pottery and a fragment of worked bone. The late Saxon pottery consisted of Stafford ware and an oolitic ware made in Gloucester. A piece of rib bone 3.5cms long with incised cross-hatched decoration was also recovered from the lower fill of the pit, suggested as a fragment of a knife handle or comb. <1>
