Description

The Isle, near Shrewsbury, is 'an undistinguished-looking large red brick block' of a house, which 'looks late 17th-century' (N. Pevsner, Shropshire (1958), 157). In 1830 an avenue of oaks almost a mile long was planted from the upper lodge to the house. Trees in the grounds included, in 1891, pine, chestnut, lime, and deodar (F. Leach, the County Seats of Shropshire (1891), 299-303). The principal feature of the grounds was Isle Pool; in the 1880s two boathouses stood on its banks (O.S. 6, XXVIII.SW (1888)).Pevsner comments: ' Close by [?Isle Farm] an older black-and-white house with walled garden and, in one of the corners, a tall brick Summer House [PRN 19404] with quoins and a pyramid roof. It looks late 17th century' (N. Pevsner, Shropshire (1958), 157) <1>

Photographed during aerial survey in 2007. <5>-<8>

Folliot Sandford drained the pool in 1793; restored by Humphrey Sandford (VIII) in 1841. <9>
