A deer park (PRN 21622) at Millichope was disparked about 1843 when Millichope Hall was destroyed. The modern Millichope park is delineated on the 1st edition 6ins map of 1890 centred at SO523 883 <1a-1c>
On the 1950 RAF vertical Aps is a linear cropmark co-incident with the parish boundary <1d>
The park E of the house (PRN 11295) was photographed from the air 17th March 1989. <2>
In the mid 18th century, and probably mainly in the mid 1760s, the grounds of Millichope Hall were embellished by the More family. Elements that can be assigned to this phase comprise an Ionic temple or rotunda by George Steuart (1770) on the far (east) side of a pool; a 10-metre high obelisk; the moustry (a rustic summerhouse, no longer extant); and perhaps an embattled sheepcote. In the 1830s, hand-in-hand with the construction of a substantial new house by Edward Haycock in the Greek Revival style, major changes were made to the Hall's surrounds. Large new kitchen gardens and walks were laid out east of the temple, the ponds were re-ordered, and a major home farm complex built on the far side of the kitchen gardens. The park (perhaps created in the 1760s) was enlarged but no longer stocked with deer, and new approaches contrived with a north lodge, again in the Greek Revival style. It may have been at this time that extensive plantings were made of American conifers. Further changes followed later in the 19th century (1843 x 84), notably the enlargement of Upper Pool to leave the temple dramatically exposed on a cliff top. In 1907 a new approach was built from the south with a lodge at the gates. In the 1970s, following the remodelling and reduction in size of Millichope Park (the name by which the house is generally known), the grounds and park were similarly restored. Evaluated for MPP in 1990-91, as one of less than 10 Deer Parks. <5>
A new Register Description was issued in 2004. <7>
In 2009 a drawn survey, plus a photographic and written record were undertaken prior to the deconstruction, repair and restoration of seven historic cascades and a bridge across Speller Brook at Millichope Park. <9>
A landscape conservation management plan was prepared for Millichope Park in 2008-2009. This included a detailed assessment of the historic development of the park, as well as a landscape survey and assessment and archaeological survey of the parkland. See ESA 6392 and child records for further detail. It is believed that the creation of the ornamental landscape park may have begun in the mid 18th century. <10>
In 2010 restoration works on the cascades and bridge required the diversion of the Speller Brook and allowed for the recording of the full extent of the surviving features, with the exception of cascaded 5-7 which were unable to be recorded due to work schedules.<11>
A brief assessment of the general condition of the bridge and cascades at Millichope Park, Munslow was undertaken in 2011, following some limited remedial work. A photographic record of the structures at that time is included. <12>
