Description

During alterations to the church (the facade was added in 1885) in removing the ground in the old courtyard two rows of holes running parallel to each other, and to the street, were exposed . They were about 12 inches below contemporary street level, the first row about the same distance from the causeway [=street?], 12-15 inches apart, 6-8 inches diameter, and 5 to 6 feet deep. They extended right across the yard up to the foundation walls of the building on the south side . The ground was said to be very soft <1>
