Description

A letter of 1881 recorded that the nature of the soil excavated for the Clive statue [in c.1860] proved that the Shirehall peat deposit (sites 60119-60121 etc) extended into this part of the Square; and concrete was used to make a firm foundation <1>

This observation was supported by a further letter four years later, noting that the statue stood on boggy ground <2>
