Description

Excavations in November 1932 for a lift shaft, situated in the yard of Lloyd s Mansion, set back from the corner of the Square and Princess Street. Objects recovered included a horn core, said to be prehistoric, boar tusk and jaw, part of a medieval floor tile and part of an undated ?post-medieval jug; also the remains of a dog which had been buried in lime . The finds were made 6 to 8 feet down, in earth, overlying boulder clay. HEF noted that the spot where the lift shaft is being sunk appears to have been just outside this marsh [i.e. the Shirehall site peat deposit], for there was very little peaty earth, and no waterlogged ground <1>

The site can be located no more precisely than the former Lloyd s Mansion yard area as shown, e.g., on the 1st ed. O.S. plan <2>
