Description
UAD field visit in November 1996 to the Traitor s Gate Restaurant, occupying basement premises on the north side of Water Lane, to the rear of and partly under 33-34 Castle Street. The east end wall of the restaurant is a sandstone wall of flattish blocks of Keele Beds rubble, bonded with a gritty mortar; no squared masonry at all, suggesting that what is visible is core work, either de-faced or seen from the wrong side. The wall adjoins that in 31a Castle Street (60245) (but at a lower level) on the line of the town wall 62502, as seen on the Burghley Map, immediately adjacent to the probable Water Lane upper gate site (62551) <1>
