Description
UAD field visit in November 1996 to modern office at the rear of 31A Castle Street was shown a sandstone wall forming the rear boundary of the property. Mainly of Keele Beds squared and coursed rubble, but block sizes possibly slightly larger than primary town wall fabric on west side of town (e.g. 62361, Pride Hill Chambers), av. 44 x 34, 33 x 38, 34 x 25cms etc., with some smaller rubble. Blocked window opening with an iron lintel. Wall appears rebuilt, but adjoins/continues wall seen next door (60244), on line of town wall 62502 running up from the postulated Water Lane upper gate (62551), as shown on the Burghley Map of c.1575 <1>
