Description

Small-scale excavations divided into a number of separate areas, two principal areas being within the standing medieval and post-medieval buildings (62104, 62105). Produced a sequence beginning with latrine- and quarry-pits containing only late Saxon type wares, followed by a dumped earth rampart (62501) interpreted as the 12th-century rampart of the castle inner bailey. This was cut by the footings of the 13th-century town wall (62515) and sealed by its clay backing/rampart. The site was occupied from c.1401 by a part stone part timber-framed hall house (62104); this was partly demolished in the 16th century and extended by a building of 1589 (62105) built for the new grammar school s headmaster. Smaller trenches outside the buildings produced evidence for terracing (area V, to the west) and for the pre-16th-century form of the frontage range on School Gardens.
The excavation was carried out in advance of restoration work by SCC Architects Department, and was accompanied by recording and analysis of the standing buildings by that department, and by A. Snell and Madge Moran <1><2><3><4>
