Description

In 1936, workmen preparing the ground at the back of the Royal Shropshire Infirmary (RSI) 'for new buildings' [possibly the old Pathology Lab., demolished 1997] exposed a red sandstone wall, parallel to the back wall of the RSI and about 4 yards from it. The wall was straight 'except for a slight bend outwards at each end beyond which it reverts to the former direction'. The wall was 1.20m thick, and H E Forrest said the masonry was of 'Norman' character. Outside this wall is/was another, forming the outer wall to the terrace at the back of the RSI, descending to a much lower level on the bank behind. H E Forrest wondered whether this too was medieval <1>

(Improbable) <2>
