Description

Documentary evidence. Manor of Brompton mentioned at Domesday. Before 1135 it was acquired by Shrewsbury Abbey, and was grouped with Emstrey and Betton Abbots as the manor of Hemes. By 1355 it had been leased. The desmesne was still termed abbey lands in the 1720s. Pop: 3 Bovarii 1086. 13 houses 1553, 12 houses 1661 (5 with 2 hearths), 10 tenants 1755 in 7 farms and 3 houses. C 1792 consolidation to three farms. Fields: Common fields still extant in C16 but enclosed by 1698 <1>

Four lands and headland in field centred at SJ5470 0763 (Barn Yard at Tithe Award. Earthworks at main grid reference in triangular field (Well Meadow Tithe award) at eastern side. A winding holloway running from SE corner of field NW and apparently truncated by pond at SJ54800884. Possible house platforms on each side and further slight traces towards the W apex of the field. ..In the ploughed field to the S across the road is quite a large amount of building debris. <4>

An air photo taken in 1989 showed an unintelligible array of cropmarks in the field to the S of the road. See PRN 04388. <5><6>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, Medium score as one of 58 DMVs. <7>
