Description
Section of probable 13th-century town wall fabric incorporated in the rear elevation of Pride Hill Chambers undercroft (62360). Contains all the diagnostic features identified by Barker's Roushill excavation. Core of wall and internal face exposed by excavation by W E Jenks within the undercroft (60066) in 1972-4. Keele Beds sandstone chippings found in excavations outside the wall (60068) suggested to the excavator that the town wall masonry may have been dressed nearby. [<1><2>] <3>
Scheduled in 1974, in connection with ongoing excavations, as length of medieval Town Wall, Sally Port and Interval Tower. Described as previously incorporated in inhabited buildings. The remains consist of a fine length about 10m long and standing about 4m high. At the SW end is a Sally Port behind which are a row of steps climbing behind the wall. At the far end of this stretch is an interval tower, previously surmounted (and to some extent support) by a 16th century building. <4>
A conservation management plan was prepared in 2015 for the entire circuit of town walls surrounding Shrewsbury (excluding around Shrewsbury Castle at the NE corner). This provides a general historic overview of the development of the town defences, together with detailed analysis and management recommendations for individual sections (in gazetteer form in volume 2). This stretch is identified as 3i/4a. ->
-> This section of probable 13th-century town wall fabric is incorporated into the rear elevation of the Pride Hill Chambers undercroft. The town wall extended west from here along the rear of the properties at the lower end of Pride Hill, and in the later postmedieval period had been subsumed into a jumble of terraced outbuildings running down the slope. This section of the town wall was subject to photogrametric recording by Aerial Cam (see ESA 7591) - 3D pdf in Library Link (warning large file). <5>
A series of photographs of the excavations were located within archive material from the collection of Ernie Jenks. Originals in Shropshire Archives. <6>
