Description

First recorded as Dun's Shut in 1634; Hobb's links this with the family of John Dun, resident between the High Street and Kiln Lane in an SPL Deed of 1459; it remained Dun's Shut into the 18th century, but was Gosnell's Shut by 1780, then Scoltock's Shut, then Bell Passage [<1>]. Records from redevelopment in 1926 (site 60123) of a substantial medieval building (62425) lying under three old cottages on the north-west side of the passage suggest that it may have had its origins in a private entry servicing the interior of a plot, with a possible hall lying at right angles to the High Street frontage. This was Hobbs's view. The 1459 deed relates to a tenement in Baker Row extending towards Kiln Lane, and provides for 'free ingress and egress to go and return by the entrance called le Shutte to the tenement being within the said entrance'; this document is also, according to Hobbs, the earliest recorded use of the term Shut [<1>]. Golden Cross Passage nearby provides a probable parallel example (62433) <2>
