Description

At Calcutts on the S side of the river between 1780 and 1790 works were set up for the distillation of pit coal, coking the coal in large ovens (or kilns) and recovering the by-products .This replaced the earlier process of coking in mounds in the open <1a>

The site now has council houses on it <2>

Between 1784 and 1786 Dundonald built 12 kilns or stoves for the manufacture of coke and tar adjacent to Calcutts ironworks. (SA 3818)…Eight further kilns were constructed .. Before 1800. ..Pitch and a type of oil used for japanning were also produced. ..The kilns at the Calcutts were operated as part of the adjacent ironworks which drew its coke supplies from them. The process used is described <3>

Correspondance concerning the erection of a bungalow on this site. <4>

The tar ovens at the Calcutts were built by the 19th Earl Dundonald. <5>

Shown 1830 map, as a row of "twenty tar kilns with condensive registers, still house, etc" and now beneath 1-5 Calcutts Road. <6>
