Description

Excavations at Rigg's Hall found an earth dump, interpreted as a rampart [PRN 62501], stratified between late Saxon pits and the 13th-century town wall [PRN 62515]. It contained two sherds of probable 12th-century pottery and a greater quantity of residual late Saxon material [<1>]. Not appearing in other comparable excavated sequences on the town defences (e.g. sites 60177, 60066, 60179) it was interpreted as a feature that was particular to the castle. Topographical evidence suggests that it was part of the outer bailey defences; this monument represents the most likely line for the rampart, running south-west from the Rigg's Hall site, parallel with School Gardens, to the likely site of the gate across Castle Street [PRN 62503]. The rise in ground level up from School Gardens towards the rear (west) of the Rodney House/Sydney House courtyard and the escarpment behind it is another indication of a retained deposit, probably a rampart, within the line of the town wall here. <2>
