Description

Excavations at Rigg's Hall found an earth (topsoil) dump, interpreted as a rampart. This was stratified between late Saxon pits and the 13th-century town wall [PRN 62515]. It contained two sherds of probable 12th-century pottery and a greater quantity of residual late Saxon material [<1>]. Not appearing in other comparable excavated sequences on the town defences (e.g. sites 60177, 60066, 60179) it was interpreted as a feature that was particular to the castle. Topographical evidence suggests that it was part of the outer bailey defences; the line of the rampart extrapolated southwards is recorded as PRN 62500. <2>
