Description

Sandstone wall running south-west from the south side of inner bailey curtain wall (62508) close to the latter's south-west corner. This wall is most likely to represent the link from the inner bailey curtain wall to the upper town gate (01442), its course cut by the construction of the Dana, c.1790 [<1>], and therefore part of the north-west perimeter of the outer bailey. Fabric of predominantly Keele Beds sandstone, varying from brown to grey/purple, with some lighter softer stone interspersed. Very regular coursing, parallel with the assumed natural slope down to the south-west, and about thirty degrees off the horizontal. This, and the squarish proportions of most of the masonry suggest that this wall was part of, or built contemporaneously with, the 13th-century town walls. The sloping coursing closely resembles what is probably the primary town wall fabric on Meadow Place (mon.62523) <2>
