Description

The town wall, sampled in the Rigg's Hall excavation, and forming the base of the rear elevation of the standing building prior to its demolition during the restoration of the library buildings in c.1979-80. Was found to consist of a foundation platform 1.9m wide, cut into the front of an earlier earth rampart (PRN 62501), interpreted as part of the outer bailey defences (PRN 62500). The wall was constructed of a Keele Beds rubble core, in a matrix of greenish gritty mortar, with an outer face of Keele Beds ashlar. The foundation platform was backed by a shallow bank of redeposited natural clay, similar to that found behind the town wall on the Roushill excavations by Barker. The town wall was, in c.1401, reduced in height and partly rebuilt in Grinshill stone with an integral fireplace to form one wall of the ground floor of the hall house (PRN 62104). Immediately south of Rigg's Hall, within the library complex, the wall stood to a height of c.3m-at least it did in 1978; what became of it during the subsequent restoration process has not been determined <2>

A conservation management plan was prepared in 2015 for the entire circuit of town walls surrounding Shrewsbury (excluding around Shrewsbury Castle at the NE corner). This provides a general historic overview of the development of the town defences, together with detailed analysis and management recommendations for individual sections (in gazetteer form in volume 2). This stretch is identified as 3d. <3>
