- ESA7590 - 2015 Conservation management survey of the town walls, Shrewsbury, by SCAS
Description
The town wall, visible in the rear elevation of Rodney House as a chamfered plinth and up to 2m of coursed Keele Beds masonry. Seen in October 1986 when the ground level was reduced at the rear of the building, exposing the unweathered plinth [<1>]. A UAD field visit in November 1996 to the interior showed that the back wall at basement level is 1.5m thick, with a few blocks of Grinshill stone incorporated in the exterior elevation above the plinth. Within the town wall a parallel wall of Grinshill stone was found at a distance of 6.17m, suggesting that a large undercroft was built within the wall, similar to the ground floor of Rigg's Hall (PRN 62104) and possibly of a similar early 15th-century date [<2>]. The building is identified as the medieval Thorne's Place (see PRNs 62132 and 62535) <3>
A conservation management plan was prepared in 2015 for the entire circuit of town walls surrounding Shrewsbury (excluding around Shrewsbury Castle at the NE corner). This provides a general historic overview of the development of the town defences, together with detailed analysis and management recommendations for individual sections (in gazetteer form in volume 2). This stretch is identified as 3c. <4>
