Description

The line of the medieval town wall, from the upper Water Lane gate (62551) north, east, and north around the Council House site. The wall is clearly depicted on the Burghley Map of c.1575, the Council House south and (late medieval) east ranges being founded upon it, with windows, a doorway, and a chimneystack shown inserted through it. These surviving elevations have not been inspected. No visible remains are known to exist west of the Council House except for sandstone masonry in the east end walls of the basement-level Traitor 's Gate Restaurant, Water Lane (site 60244) and the adjoining premises 31A Castle Street (site 60245). The reference by Ralegh Radford (1961) to 'a substantial stretch of ashlar with a chamfered plinth on the north side of Water Lane' marking 'the south side of the outer bailey' is bewildering <1>
