Description

A UAD field visit in November 1996 by NJB/GP [<1>] found that the cellarage to this building, formerly two properties, is almost entirely of sandstone construction. Most of it however appears to represent the re-use of building materials to create a sub-structure contemporary with the standing building. Some elements of the cellarage may however be earlier: much of the base of the front (west) wall, which is composed of level and coherent courses of unidentified sandstone masonry (rendered) up to 1.5m high; also possibly the south (party wall), which represents part of the line of the Meadow Place town wall (62522), though the visible masonry-a mixture of largish rectangular squared blocks and some unsquared small rubble-does not resemble other known town wall fabric. There is no evidence that the building incorporates any remains of the Lower Castle Gate (62521), unless the base of the frontage wall is in some way associated with it; comments from Ernie Jenks suggest that the gate lies further towards the opposite (west) side of the street. The rear of this property is formed by the substantial terrace wall 62537 <2>
