Description
Street-space (morphological component). The present School Gardens was known as Rotten Lane or row or some variation thereon in the Middle Ages and into the 16th century, when it began to be known after the Grammar School site founded on its north side in the 1550s <1>
. Its curving course appears to be a direct reflection of the that of the Outer Bailey rampart (62500/62501), but whether the lane was a planned intramural street or former more casually is unknown <?>
