Desk Based Assessment carried out in 2001 on Castle House due to proposed alterations to Ludlow Castle. The building stands to the north of the gateway, into the outer court of Ludlow castle. Castle house was built in a series of campaigns probably starting with the construction of a barracks in the 16th century, but not attaining its final form until around the turn of the 20th century. <3>

A desk-based assessment was undertaken in 2002 of Castle House, now in use of flats, a complex building that incorporates various structures including part of the Castle's curtain wall. This describes the history and development of the house, using a range of documentary, cartographic and illustrative resources. Includes a phased plan of development in this area of the castle bailey. ->

-> By the time the castle was leased to the Earl of Powis in 1771 a building north of the tennis court (see PRN 06178) and adjoining the curtain-wall was described as the Castle Inn, but after the Earl bought the castle in 1811 he closed the inn (and others in Ludlow) and later converted it into a gentleman’s residence with servant’s quarters and stables being built within the tennis court. The building, now called Castle House, had a number of tenants over the years and in 1904 Sir Alexander Condie Stephen undertook major alterations and extensions including conversion of the stables to a servant’s ball with bedrooms above, an extension to the north encompassing the Beacon Tower to provide a new library and billiards room, a light-well and grand entrance in place of the old study and some external windows. A few years later Richard Henderson installed electricity and built twin gables facing the garden to provide two attic bedrooms. Little external alteration has occurred since but Archdeacon Maude is remembered for the installation of the large fireplace in the billiards room in the late 1920s.->

-> In 1942 the building was requisitioned by the military and the Army and then the RAF used it to bouse essential workers. When the building was eventually de-requisitioned in 1957 it consisted of 8 flats and was purchased by Ludlow Borough Council to become part of their housing stock. <4>
