Description

(In 1968) the mound was 2.2m high and 30m in diameter and the ditch was 1.2m deep . OS FI 1968 <1>

The motte is tree covered and set in improved pasture land. The ditch is in the ploughed area but is still visible encircling the motte, about 25cm deep and 3m wide on the S, deepening to c 0.5m on the N. The motte is broad and flat-topped. An ancient disturbance on the south side has removed some material, but condition otherwise good. No sign of bailey. I Burrow FI 1976 <4>

Evaluated for MPP in 1990-1, High score as one of 43 Motte castles <7>

Scheduling affirmed in 2001. Scheduling description: ->

-> The monument includes the earthwork and buried remains of a motte castle occupying a commanding position on high ground in an area of gently undulating land. It lies 130m south west of a medieval moated site, which is the subject of a separate scheduling. ->

-> The circular flat-topped earthen motte is approximately 25m at its base, 15m across the top and stands to a height of 1.8m. The south eastern quadrant has been cut into by a later pit, now visible as a shallow depression. The motte is surrounded by a broad ditch about 11m wide, which is apparent as a slight earthwork. ->

-> The iron fence surrounding the motte is excluded from the scheduling, although the ground beneath it is included. <8>

A conservation management plan was prepared in June 2016 for Willaston Motte Castle, covering the reduction of the understorey scrub and vegetation, removal of defective mature trees and selective thinning of the mature tree cover to establish stable grass ground cover. <9>
