Publication providing an outline history of the Old Hall, standing on the site of a motte and bailey (PRN 01751). By at least 1369 a manor house had been built in the bailey (<4>), which was later replaced by The Old Hall in the 17th century. The date of construction of the old hall is suggested as between 1661 and 1672. It is postulated that the original house was destroyed or damaged in the civil war, although this is offered as a tentative suggestion only. ->

-> The author suggests that the present house incorporates reused timbers (reporting on renovation work undertaken in 1999) - although he acknowledges that Madge Moran didn't note these during a site visit in May 1999. Apparently dendrochronology was not possible on the timber frame. The author also suggests the inclusion of an earlier cruck in the house, although this was not identified by Madge Moran. ->

-> When the building was reonvated in 1999, existing Harnage Stone was moved from the south and east sections of the roof to the west face. ->

-> Includes detailed tenurial history and reproduces a number of cartographic and pictorial resources. Also includes detail of alterations/additions made to the building in both the 19th century, when it became The Rectory, and in the 20th century. It was converted into a hotel in 1966. <7>
