Description

Kitchen garden walls, c. 1800. Tall stone-coped brick walls, with segmental-arched doorways, encloses area of approx 90 x 40m with ramped wall terminated by square pier extending to south east. Range of early/mid C19 garden buildings to north, with gabled plain tile roofs; segmental-arched doors and windows to one-storey elevation punctuated by 3 two-storey gables; bellcote and ridge stack to left. House to south west corner is not of special architectural or historic interest <1>
In the late sixteenth to early seventeenth century the medieval house of Apley Castle [PRN 00696] was completely remodelled. A walled garden was created to the NW of the house [PRN 8469/17432] . In the late eighteenth century a new Apley Castle was built [PRN 12881] and the former house converted to a stable block. By the early nineteenth century the original walled garden had been converted to farm use, and a new walled garden and nursery had been built to the west of the old Apley Castle , probably at the same time as the construction of the new Apley Castle. This is now [1990] a commercial nursey. <2>
