Description

Dovecote. Early/mid C18. English garden wall bond brick; pyramidal plain tile roof surmounted by 1980s lantern. Square plan. 2 storeys. Large semi-circular arched entries to ground floor and semi-circular arched doorway to first floor. Interior inspection not possible at time of survey. Included for group value <1>

Just outside the east wall of the earlier walled garden at Apley Castle is a late 18th century dovecot, which has been restored. It is a tall, square building with a pyramidal roof topped by a glover. There is a vaulted undercroft, and the main roosting holes must be in the brickwork of the tall upper storey (which is reached by a replacement external staircase). It seems likely that the dovecot was associated with the construction of the 1791 house. The brick link to the garden wall is a later insert, and there is evidence of a later building butting against the northern wall of the dovecot which has since been removed. <2>
