Description

Possible deserted village site <1>

(SJ438267) This field contains no earthworks although across the road there are signs of ridge and furrow. (SJ442263) The park surrounding Petton Hall (PRN 16183). This contains a motte (PRN 01130), a small chapel (PRN 12315) and a moated site (PRN 1129). The motte subsequently had an ice house built into it. …A large square depression just N of the moat is a fishpond. Apart from these features there is no evidence of a deserted village <2>

Other extensive earthworks of uncertain character, including holloways and possible platforms lie in the N half of the large field on the N side of the moat. These could be remains of a deserted settlement. They could equally be the result of C18/C19 landscaping. Ridge and furrow (E/W) lies in the field to the E of the moat on top of the adjacent hill.
