Description

Moulton Paddocks - estate known as 'Fidget Hall', the racing seat of Sir Ernest Cassel (1901), sold and demolished in 1950. Edward VII was a frequent visitor.
Named Fidget on 1838 tithe map, when owned by William Webber esq (S1). Substantial House, named Moulton Paddocks on 1880s OS map, much enlarged with formal gardens to W including fountain by 1900s OS map. HBSMR mapping limited to area of house and surrounding gardens, greenhouses etc plus tree lined driveway to N, including entrance lodge. Extent of larger estate not mapped but clearly includes formal, mainly circular, tree stands/plantations by 1900s.
See details in Lost Country Houses of Suffolk by WM Roberts (S2).
For early history and surviving elements of estate examined by Ted Robbens (details of ownership etc up to circa 1899 in S3). In ownership of Sam Chiney Jr (1786-1854) by 1820 (Fidget Farm was to be sold at auction in June 1820 when it was said to be of 70 acres). Mansion constructed by architect Mr Clarke of Newmarket for surgeon William Webber in 1840s. In 1854 the Moulton Paddocks Estate, which was then described as 310 acres, was up for sale (S3).
