Full description

[1]: A stone-built culvert (structure 36) was found under Tower House. It was aligned north-south and lay just east of the west wall of Tower House. It was built of limestone walls, 0.80m apart. It had a minimum height of 0.55m, however the depth could not be ascertained as it as filled deposits which were not completely removed. (More details in report.) At the north end of the culvert, under Winkle Street, was a stone-vaulted structure (see separate record - IP). No dating evidence for the culvert and vaulted structure was found, although they pre-dated the construction of Tower House/Solent House, and could be of medieval date. Together they probably formed part of a drainage system flowing out into Southampton Water. A later entrance to the culvert from Solent House was probably inserted in the post-medieval or early modern period (that is, before 1900 - IP); it was built of stone and brick. It was not clear whether this entrance was a replacement of an earlier structure or a new opening.
