Summary

This tower may have been built in the mid-14th century, perhaps just after 1339. The 1454 defence terrier refers to this tower as the corner tower or small tower; there were three loops in the tower. In 1544 it is referred to as the corner tower next to Beaulieu Cellar. In other sources it is called the Square Tower; some historic maps confirm the shape. Englefield in 1801 mentions this location as marking a sudden change of direction but does not specifically mention the tower. Most of the southern town wall was demolished in 1803/4, however part of this tower survives. It incorporates two openings, one an arch of uncertain function, the other a possible gate. Most of the towers along the southern wall were half-round, so the square form of this tower may suggest it was a gate tower; no gate is mentioned in the 1454 terrier.
