Summary
In the 1454 defence terrier this tower is said to be at the east end of the Wool Bridge. The tower was probably built in the mid 14th century, most likely shortly after 1339, along with the southern town wall. There were three defensive loops in the tower in 1454. By 1544 the tower was known as St Barbara’s Tower. It is shown on late 18th century maps. Englefield’s 1801 description implies that it was half-round, similar to others further east. It was demolished in 1803/4 along with the southern wall and Watergate. The site of the tower is probably on Town Quay between French Street and Bugle Street. (This tower has been confused with the next tower to the east, although the 1454 defence terrier clearly distinguishes between the two.)
