Summary
The upper part of the west (inner) side of castle bailey ditch was excavated during archaeological excavations in Albion Place in 1953/4, just north of Castle East Gate (SOU 132 - Site 3, Albion Place). Limited dating evidence suggested the ditch was dug some time in the 12th century. (See parent record MSH3404 - the north bailey ditch.)

Full description
SOU 132 (Site 3, Albion Place) (excavations in Albion Place in 1953/4):
[1] in [2]: A partial section was cut through the west side of the castle ditch just north of Castle East Gate. Finds recovered from the excavated ditch fills were prehistoric material, and 11th and 12th century pottery (more in source). The ditch cut some earlier features of probable 12th century date. From this, it was suggested that the ditch was probably dug some time in the 12th century. (See report for more information.)
SCC HER: Fig 36 shows that the upper part of the west (inner) side of ditch was excavated.
