Full description

See Parent Record MSH23 for a summary of the documentary and excavation evidence for Southampton Castle, a discussion of the development of the Castle derived largely from [1], and a full list of sources. Some additional documentary evidence is included on this record. The references/evidence below are in chronological order.
-------------------------------------
SCC HER: The existence of a barbican in front of the Castle South Gate is currently conjectural.

[2]: The Castle South Gate is shown (but not named), and possibly a structure in front of it.

[5]: not checked (currently unavailable to HER).

[4] (also [3]): NMR. Shows site of Barbican, referencing [5].

[1]: (The main publication for Southampton Castle. Barbican not mentioned or shown on plans.)

[6]: Popular booklet. Barbican in front of South Gate shown as a possible structure on the Third Phase plan (late 14th century). It is shown with a gate at the west end. Barbican protecting the South Gate. (Source/evidence not discussed.)

SCC HER: The shape of the parish boundary on the 1846 map [7], and perhaps the 1870 [8] “ward boundary”, may provide evidence for a barbican in front of the South Gate. This is discussed on the castle parent record MSH23. This has been used to plot the possible barbican in the GIS. It may have been used when compiling [6]. The arched gateway mentioned by Englefield [9][10] (probably Davies’ [11] source) could be the south gate or a gate in the barbican; its exact position is unclear.
