Summary

In 1801/5, Englefield mentioned a square tower at the west end of the east-west town wall that ran out from Biddles Gate. It does not appear to have existed in 1454 and is not shown on any maps. The town wall was finally demolished in 1898/1899 when the area was completely cleared to create a single roadway - Western Esplanade - along the walls. (See MSH503.)
