Summary
The 1454 defence terrier mentions a tower along this stretch of the town wall. It is probably the tower shown on the 1870 map - rectangular with a small house built into the remains. The town wall was finally demolished in 1898/1899 when the area was completely cleared to create a single roadway along the walls - Western Esplanade. This part of the town wall may have been built in the late 14th century, although could be later. It was almost certainly in place by 1454. (See MSH503.)
